Spellbinders—A floral packed 90th birthday card using the Club Blooms die set + a cardstock comparison!

Hello, Crafters!

Today I’m back with a card that I am so, so, so in love with! A little bit ago Yana Smakula shared a video on the impactfulness of using dark backgrounds in cardmaking. I was in need of a special 90th birthday card for my sweet grandma, so I decided to give this a try, but with her favorite color! My grandma absolutely loves purple, so I decided pack my dark purple card front full of purple flowers, and I could not be happier with how it turned out!

A quick cardstock comparison…

I think I mentioned this in a blog post a couple months back, but after Concord & 9th filled out their color palette, I was greedy and wanted more color! I finally took the leap and picked up some cardstock from The Stamp Market, and I love that they sell their cardstocks in a variety of sizes— 6 sheets, 12 sheets, and 24 sheets. Before I made my purchase, I was scouring the internet and Pinterest for bloggers/crafters sharing cardstock comparisons, but I couldn’t find. So I thought I would share one today in case anyone else is looking to buy more cardstock but didn’t want to buy something similar to what they have. I have the full range of Concord & 9th cardstocks and almost exclusively use it day in and day out, so when I did my shopping at TSM, I tried my best to choose colors that I thought were different from what I owned, and for the most part I did so. However, I will say that I choose four colors that I knew were similar, but that they had different undertones or saturations to them. I do show these in my video, but I’ll include some photos below! The Concord & 9th colors aren’t labeled, but they follow the order C9 has them in, if you have any questions, drop a comment down below and I can help you out!

Now onto the star of the show!

Isn’t she a beauty?! I am so in love with this card, it turned out better than I could have ever imagined. I die cut my flowers out of Ballet Slipper, Briar Rose, Lilac, Grape Soda, and Orchid (TSM) cardstocks, the flower centers out of Sunflower and Honeycomb, and the greenery out of Lemongrass and Avocado. This color palette is a beauty!

I used Champagne Glimmer foil to hot foil the birthday subsentiment from the More Sentiments Glimmer foil plate set, and added some matte gold digits above it that I die cut using the Bold Numbers dies from The Greetery. I adhered my flowers/leaves down a couple ways—all leaves were glued down to the Eggplant card front as well as flowers that didn’t have leaves with them. Some flowers were popped up on thin foam squares, and some up on thick foam squares. I really like the dimension that this added to this card, especially with all the different layers. To finish the card off, I pulled out the Ghostly Parade sequin mix that I had in my stash because it was the only one I had that had gems, and luckily enough there was an iridescent/duo-chrome purple (this is unfortunately not sold any more, but I linked something similar). I think this added the perfect finishing touch to this card! I didn’t show it on screen (I wasn’t sure what I wanted to use at the time of filming), but I did stamp an inside sentiment of ‘don’t count the candles, just enjoy the glow!’ from the Happy Birthday Sentiments stamp set from Pinkfresh Studio. This stamp set is fabulous and has so many sentiment options!

I hope you loved this card! So sorry that it took me so long to get back to posting, one of the reasons is I was working on two commissions that were inspired by this card—those will be shared in a separate blog post! Thanks so much for stopping by today, I hope to catch you next time! 😊
